Describe: There’s a single chair on the ground and a bird walking.
Reflect: This is a dang wonky collage of a chair, the perspective shifts at the center of the chair, it’s also kind of an ugly chair. Formal Elements: Taken from above, broken rule of thirds, simplicity.

Describe: There are buildings lining a street with an overcast sky.
Reflect: I like the differing perspectives coming together, the photo brings together primary colors, and I like that you can tell it’s a windy and stormy day. Formal Elements: Taken from above, expansive depth of field, and lines. Describe: There are three people sitting on a couch with their pets.
Reflect: I like that the collage is placed against blue and it’s interesting that one of the boys is shown twice in the collage. I like the warm tones in the photo. Formal Elements: Expansive depth of field, lack of simplicity, point of view approaches eye level with the subject. Describe: There’s a man sitting in a chair reading a magazine.
Reflect: I wonder what the man was reading and if this was posed or not. I like the fact that the man isn’t looking at the camera. Formal Elements: Taken from above, expansive depth of field, and soft light. Describe: There’s a road extending to the horizon, this is taken in the desert, and there are a lot of road signs.
Reflect: There’s an insane number of pictures in this collage, I like that all the edges around the sky pictures are light, I wonder if all the road signs were that close together in reality. Formal Elements: Expansive depth of field, lines, and rule of thirds. Describe: There’s a mountain in the background, a river, and some plants.
Reflect: Certain images of the same object have different exposures/lighting, the center is put together nearly perfectly and the edges, the trees are the most vibrant part of the photo. Formal Elements: There is expansive depth of field, rule of thirds, and lines. Describe: There’s a person in a pool, they are floating and looking up, there’s another image of them swimming.
Reflect: I like the vibrancy in the photo, I wonder how long the guy floated in order for Hockney to capture the whole thing, the photo holds tension. Formal Elements: There’s expansive depth of field, point of view is eye level with the subject, and the collage kind of creates rule of thirds. Describe: There is a car, the ground is covered in snow, and there’s a film or photography crew.
Reflect: The image is candid, there’s a branch off the collage that shows a path of footsteps, and I think the final image they took is off to the side. Formal Elements: The image uses diagonal lines, expansive depth of field, and a point of view that’s documentary style. Describe: There is a guitar, a vase of flowers, and a bowl of vegetables.
Reflect: The image feels relaxed, I do kind of wonder why there’s casually a bowl of veggies with flowers and a guitar on the floor, the image makes a perfect rectangle but some of the individual images have forced angles. Formal Elements: The image is taken from above, it uses lines, and avoids simplicity. Describe: In this image there is a red barn, a silo, and snow on the ground.
Reflect: I wonder if this barn is personal to Hockney. I’m drawn to this image because the colors compliment each other and the collage doesn’t create a perfect square. Formal Elements: This image utilizes expansive depth of field, lines, and framing. |
